With Halloween coming up this weekend, I thought I’d highlight some of my favorite dark & spooky songs. Instead of featuring the usual suspects like “Monster Mash,” “Ghostbusters,” or “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas,” I decided to focus mostly on some of the more modern songs that have a Halloween twist on them. When I say modern, it doesn’t necessarily mean in the last year, but at the very least something upbeat you could play at a party without having all your sexy shirtless vampires and cowboys fall asleep.

There are actually several great songs from the last few years that you definitely should include on your playlist if you intend on having people over for Halloween. Even if you aren’t having anyone over, they’d be great songs to get you in the mood while you get dressed up and pre-funk/pre-drink before you head out. Enjoy list below!

I remember this song from one of those compilation CDs I had when I was a teenager. Great upbeat dance song with a spooky beat that never got old in my opinion.

This isn’t a new song, but it’s a classic that (as I mentioned) isn’t so slow that it would put your guests to sleep.

8. ROB ZOMBIE – “DRAGULA” (Hot Rod Herman Remix)

GREAT Halloween song from Rob Zombie’s “Super Sexy Swingin’ Sounds” Remix album. I used to have it. Funny how times have changed. You wouldn’t catch me buying a Rob Zombie album nowadays.

I can’t have a Halloween list and not have Lady Gaga in it. Seriously, every day is Halloween for Mother Monster and most of her videos are dark enough to be as well. Sidenote, a great Lady Gaga parody of “This Is Halloween” called “Gagaween” recently came out. Is definitely worth watching.

This is such a classic eighties theme song, I couldn’t resist including it. Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I watched it countless times. I even had all of the figurines and the Ghostbusters’ building. This is a song everyone knows the words to.

5. KATY PERRY – “E.T.” ft Kanye West

Besides your vampires, witches, and monsters, you’ve also got your aliens, or Extra Terrestrials. In this song, Perry sings about the latter.

A more modern spooky track from RiRi, this hit song is bound to get your party jumping.

Definitely a classic and I wouldn’t dare excluding it from the list. The video/short film is essentially a Halloween story on it’s own.

We love Dev! This is her most recent single from her upcoming album, “The Night The Sun Came Up” and an excellent addition to your Halloween playlist as you and your friends dance (and maybe do other things) in the dark.

This lyrics of this song puts this song over the edge for me, making it number one on my list. This in combination with the fact that it is such a fun/upbeat song that you guests will “eat it up”.
