First and foremost, Happy Thanksgiving to all our US readers. Hope you’re not eating too much turkey today. That amino acid tryptophan can be a bitch.
To celebrate turkey day, I thought I’d rank Friends‘ Thanksgiving episodes. Their holiday-themed shows were typically their best and most anticipated of the season. Til this day, I still enjoy watching the classic NBC sitcom. Check out how I ranked the episodes below. To refresh your memory, I added a memorable scene from each. Enjoy!
Friends Thanksgiving Episodes Ranked
10. The One With the List (Season 2)
Even though technically this was the Thanksgiving episode for Season 2, not much time was devoted to the actual holiday. The closest thing to a festive dinner was Monica experimenting with mockolate (faux chocolate). Instead, the show focused on the fallout of Ross and Rachel’s epic kiss outside of Central Perk from the previous episode. The new couple hit a speed bump when Rachel discovers Ross’ “Julie vs Rachel” pros and cons list. NEVER PUT IT IN WRITING!!! Silly Ross 😉
The scene below perfectly highlights why men are truly from Mars while women are from Venus. Rachel gets very detailed describing the kiss, while Ross takes literally seconds to tell his boys.
9. The One Where Underdog Gets Away (Season 1)
After watching the Underdog balloon go off track during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the gang returns to the apartment to discover no one brought the keys. As a result of being locked out, Monica’s dinner burns and Rachel misses her flight to Vail. This forces the gang to feast on grilled cheese sandwiches instead of a juicy turkey. Perhaps this incident is why Monica’s apartment remained largely unlocked for the rest of the series’ run.
8. The One With Chandler In a Box (Season 4)
Chandler being locked in a box as punishment for kissing Joey’s girlfriend wasn’t very amusing to me. The only reason why this episode beats out the previous two is due to the fact Michael Vartan guest starred as Richard’s son. I had such a crush on him during his Never Been Kissed and Alias years. The highlight of the episode is when Monica responds to criticisms that she’s dating her former boyfriend’s son.
“Fine. Judge all you want to, but [to Ross] married a lesbian, [to Rachel] left a man at the altar, [to Phoebe] fell in love with a gay ice dancer, [to Joey] threw a girl’s wooden leg in a fire, and [to Chandler] live in a box!,” Monica exclaims.
7. The One With Rachel’s Other Sister (Season 9)
Too bad there was never an episode featuring Rachel’s sisters (Christina Applegate and Reese Witherspoon) at the same time. That would’ve been epic. As hilarious as the Green sisters brawl was, the funniest moments revolved around Monica’s obsession with her wedding china. From how to eat turkey at least six inches above the plate to frantically trying to save them during the girl fight was classic Monica.
6. The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs (Season 7)
This episode ranks near the bottom on nearly all the lists I’ve seen. While it wasn’t the funniest, the reason why it’s so high on mine is due to the random “name the 50 states” game. I love playing that game with friends. Not to toot my own horn, but I typically do quite well. At times even beating my American pals. This episode also featured one of Joey’s most memorable DUH lines.
“This is all a moo point … It’s like a cow’s opinion. You know, it just doesn’t matter. It’s moo.” – Joey
5. The One With the Late Thanksgiving (Season 10)
With it being the last season, expectations were high for the show’s last Thanksgiving episode. It’s only fitting that the dinner actually never happened. Due to Rachel and Phoebe enrolling Emma in a baby beauty pageant and Ross and Joey watching a Rangers game, they arrived hours late for dinner at Monica and Chandler’s. The visual of the late arrivals squeezing their heads through an ajar door was epic. The scene below says it all.
4. The One With the Football (Season 3)
There’s nothing more Thanksgiving than football and turkey. The boys battled the girls for the honor of holding the Geller Cup. The game highlights, especially the ones in slow-motion, were everything. Check it out below.
3. The One With the Rumor (Season 8)
Brad Pitt. Enough said. We learn that Pitt’s character and Ross were best buds in high school and formed the “I Hate Rachel Green” club. They hated Rachel so much, they started a rumor she was born a hermaphrodite and still had a hint of a teenie weenie. Even with that, Rachel was still the most popular girl in high school.
2. The One With All the Thanksgivings (Season 5)
Most of the lists I’ve seen placed this one at the very top. I can definitely see why. The flashback scenes where we saw a pre-nose job Rachel, chubby Monica and Miami Vice-styled Ross and Chandler were some of the most iconic moments of the show. During the flashbacks, we learned what prompted Monica to lose weight and why Chandler is missing part of his toe. Let’s not forget Phoebe’s arm being blown off while tending to an injured solider during the Revolutionary War. How random, yet hilarious, was that?
1. The One Where Ross Got High (Season 6)
The scene below is why this is my all-time favorite Thanksgiving episode. For me, this is why Friends was such a success. When the six main cast members were in the same room, magic occurred. Their chemistry was undeniable.
For me, Rachel’s dessert disaster was the highlight. Apparently, I’m not alone in thinking that. Some hardcore fans of the show have attempted to recreate Rachel’s infamous Shepherd’s Pie Trifle. Before you attempt the recipe, remember it smells like feet. At least according to Ross it does. Joey, however, enjoyed it tremendously.
Which one was your favorite episode? If you don’t agree with my rankings, perhaps the following are more in line with your personal preferences. BuzzFeed, E Online, VH1 and Zap2It have some of the better ones out there. Definitely check them out.
