The other night, Patrick and I decided to have a nice quiet night in. We made some Bailey’s Milkshakes and cozied up on the couch to watch a classic Christmas movie, Home Alone. It got us thinking about all those other Christmas movies that may not be Oscar material by any means, but just make you feel good about the holiday season. We’ve decided to pull a list together of our favorite holiday flicks in case you were looking for one to watch over your Christmas break.
Released: 1990
This classic movie finds Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) home alone after his entire family leaves the house in a hurry to catch their flight to Paris. Meanwhile, Kevin discovers that robbers are trying to loot the houses in the neighborhood while families are away on Christmas vacations. With some quick thinking, Kevin booby traps the house to catch them red-handed. Definitely a great renter over the holiday season.
Released: 1988
This is one of Patrick’s picks. I’ve seen it once or twice I think but not enough to remember it as well as he does. In this movie, Ernest (Jim Varney) tries to help Santa find his successor. A woman tries to steal Santa’s magical sack and Ernest tries to find it to return it to him on Christmas Eve. This movie is quite funny but I think you have to be a fan of the Ernest movie franchise to really appreciate the humor.
Released: 2003
Any girl and gay out there would say this is one of their favorite holiday movies by a landslide. This movie follows the lives of eight different couples dealing with their love lives in various loosely related story lines. And to top it all off, they are dealing with all of this during the most hectic time of the year, Christmas. Starring Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon and Liam Neeson, you’ll want to grab this one to cuddle up on the couch with a loved one.
Released: 2005
This is one of my newer favorite Christmas movie. I saw this one in theatres and cried my eyes out. In this movie, an uptight, conservative, businesswoman (Sarah Jessica Parker) accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family’s annual Christmas celebration and finds that she’s a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life. Make sure you have your Kleenex with you. You’re going to need them.
Released: 1994-2006
For a good family Christmas movie or two, you can always trust Tim Allen and his The Santa Clause movie franchise. All three movies are great for younger ones and can bring the whole family together. In the first movie, we learn that Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is selected to be Santa Clause. In the second film, Santa must find his Mrs. Clause. And in the final and third installment, Santa runs into trouble with Jack Frost.
Released: 2003
This is also one of my favorites for the holidays. Will Ferrel is an elf in the North Pole sent to the U.S. after causing some troubles due to his large size. In New York, he must find his true identity. Along the way, he meets a few Scrooges but can’t help but spread his love for Christmas and the Christmas spirit. This a good laugh-out-loud renter. Make sure you don’t choke on your popcorn with this one.
Did I miss one of your favorites? Tell me below, I’d love to watch them too this Christmas. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

So many you missed! I love the classic ones. White Christmas, Its a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th St (the original). And some National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for some goofy fun :)

The “W Network” during the month of December, always shows a collection of those made-for-television Christmas movies. Just watched “Snow2: Brain Freeze” & “Snowglobe” tonight. Yes, some are cheesy….but it’s the Christmas season and I’ve enjoyed watching all these movies at this time of the year. Also, there are few gay genre movies with Christmas/wintery settings in them, that also come to my mind at this time of the year. One of my ultimate favorite is “Torch Song Trilogy” (with Harvey Fierstein, Brian Kerwin & Matthew Broderick). Plus there is also “Breakfast with Scot” (starring Canadian Tom Cavanaugh) & “Make the Yuletide Gay” (starring Degrassi’s Adamo Ruggerro). Christmas/Holiday movies are different for everyone. So whatever it is you enjoy, may you always have that time to sit back and enjoy it like I do. Merry Christmas!!!

I loved Ernest Saves Christmas, but what about A Christmas Story?
