Beauty And The Beast waltzed away with an estimated $170 million from 4,210 theaters. That works out to $40,380 per location, becoming the highest debut for a March title in history. The previous record holder was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which raked in $166 million during its opening frame last year.
In addition, the Emma Watson film raked in $180 million overseas. In just three days, it’s earned $350 million worldwide.
Elsewhere in the Top 10, Kong: Skull Island slipped to second place, adding another $28.9 million to its $259.3 million global total ($110.1 million domestically). In third was Hugh Jackman’s last hurrah as Wolverine. Logan clawed another $17.5 million, boosting its global take to $524 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Jordan Peele’s hit horror-comedy Get Out and the faith-based film The Shack, earning $13.2 million ($133.1 million domestic total) and $6.1 million ($42.6 million domestic total) respectively.
