Barbie Hits the Big Screen

Oh Barbie. I will admit that since I had a few really close girl cousins, I may have been forced to play with Barbies at one point, but only because it was a life and death situation. Actually, I remember my other cousin shaving the hair off all of his sisters Barbie because they were playing “haircut”. Haha- she was devastated. Anyway…

Universal Pictures struck a deal with Mattel to make a live action film around number one girl toy and the most famous doll in history. 50 year old Barbie bosts 99% worldwide brand awareness. Universal Pictures Chairman Marc Shmuger says, “Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands. So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture. We’re grateful to Mattel for entrusting us with this extraordinary opportunity.”

On one hand, the film could actually be have a formula for success. A name with 99% worldwide brand awareness + Producer Laurence Mark (Julie & Julie, and currently working on a comedy with Jack Nicholson & Reese Witherspoon). Mark says, “Barbie may be the most popular girl in the world, and has always been a wonderfully aspirational figure, so we must do her proud.”

On the other hand, what could the storyline possibly be? It’s not like Barbie can get pregnant because she has no woohoo. And who is going to play Barbie? Real life Barbie, Paris Hilton? In terms of everything that looks Barbie, she certainly wins, but in my head Barbie is much nicer than Paris. Someone like Reese? Na, I think maybe her “young’ Legally Blond days are over…needs to be someone younger. How about Ken? How about Chase Crawford? Yes, he’d be a great Ken…I’d play with that doll for sure.
