In the words of Tyra Banks during America’s Next Top Model Cycle 4, “I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you!!!” They should be bowing their heads in shame like the picture above. This is no bueno.
When I first heard Ariana Grande and John Legend were covering the Oscar-winning smash hit “Beauty and the Beast” for the upcoming live-action remake, I was giddy with excitement. Both singers are talented vocalists and I absolutely love Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson’s original recording. Perhaps, my expectations were too high because I’m extremely disappointed with the cover after hearing it in full. It had such promise on paper and the few snippets heard during the latest movie trailer.
While there’s no denying that Grande absolutely slays the vocals, the arrangement makes the entire thing sound like cheesy karaoke music. Seriously, the producers should be shot. And Legend, talented in his own right, doesn’t really fit with Ariana. No chemistry there. A different duet partner and engineers could’ve made this epic. All in all, it’s underwhelming to say the least. Give it a listen below and weigh in afterward.
