He’s blond, blue eyed, athletic and gorgeous. Meet Kevin Keller, Riverdale’s newest resident. This fall Kevin will be joining Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead as their new classmate at Riverdale High. Kevin’s addition will mark a milestone in Archie Comics history- he will be the first openly gay character. GO RIVERDALE.
Keller will make his first appearance in VERONICA Issue #202 in the featured full-issue story, “Isn’t it Bromantic?”. With his all-American good looks, he captures the eye of Veronica, who insists on making him her next love conquest. Kevin tries to let her down easy, but in true Veronica fashion, she doesn’t let up. During the cat-and-mouse chase, mayhem and hilarity ensues.
Here’s what Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater said about Kevin’s addition.
“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,”
Growing up, Archie Comics were one of my favorites to read. My group of elementary school friends and I would have sleepovers all the time to play video games and read Archie Comics all night long. I love how the brand is moving with the times and including a openly gay character to hang with the iconic Riverdale characters. With this type of inclusion, younger generations will be exposed to gay individuals at an earlier age and hopefully lead to more tolerance and acceptance.
This historic issue will be available on September 1, 2010. Make sure you go out and grab your copy at supermarket tills everywhere. I know I will be.
