For two weeks now, Aquaman has been crushing several international markets. This weekend, the James Wan-directed superhero film brought its mighty powers to Canada and the United States. It crushed its competitors bringing in $67.4 million from 4,125 theaters, in line with industry projections. With generally favorable critic reviews and an A-minus CinemaScore, The Jason Momoa flick should do well over the holiday season.
Meanwhile, Mary Poppins Returns arrived less than projections. It earned an estimated $22.2 million over the weekend, $31 million if you include its total since its Wednesday opening. With an A-minus CinemaScore, no doubt the family friendly musical will bolster its box office intake during the lucrative holiday season.
Rounding out the Top 3 was Bumblebee starring Hailee Steinfeld which took in $21 million. It too also scored an A-minus CinemaScore and fell below industry expectations as well.
Also opening this weekend were Jennifer Lopez’s rom-com Second Act with an estimated $6.5 million and Welcome to Marwen starring Steve Carell with $2.4 million. Each film landed at No. 7 and No. 9 respectively.
