Production for the Barbie live-action movie was set to begin in spring 2017 with a June 29, 2018 release date in mind. However, the project hit a snag when Amy Schumer, who was set to star, dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. It appears things might be getting back on track in the near future.
Sony Pictures is reportedly eyeing Anne Hathaway to replace Schumer. If you’re not overly excited about this prospect, don’t get too worked up since negotiations are still very premature, according to rumors.
If Hathaway signs on, she’ll play “a character who lives in Barbieland, among all of the various Barbie characters beloved by collectors, who gets kicked out, basically because she’s not perfect enough and is a bit eccentric. She then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in one self, free of trying to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.”
In addition to Hathaway’s casting rumor, there’s chatter that Australian Alethea Jones (Fun Mom Dinner) might snag the directing gig.
What do you think of Anne’s potential casting? While I like the 34-year-old Devil Wears Prada actress, I was looking forward to Amy’s irreverent take on the iconic doll, who for many years embodied impossibly perfect physical proportions. Hathaway, with her statuesque body, seems a bit expected, don’t you think? Weigh in below.
