Miss Philippines Catriona Gray beat out Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green to snatch the crown and walk away with the title of Miss Universe 2018, but she wasn’t the only winner of the night. Miss Spain Angela Ponce made history as the competition’s first ever transgender delegate.
During the telecast, the organization celebrated this milestone by airing a piece about Ponce. “My hope is for tomorrow to be able to live in a world of equality for everyone, simply for us all to understand that we are human and that we must make all our lives easier together,” Ponce said in the video segment. “That reality for many people is going to change.”
After the video, Ponce confidently walked the runway much to the delight of the crowd who gave her a warm reception. Watch that moment below.
