Entrepreneur: Andrew Christian- Fashion Designer

In the middle of our Los Angeles trip, Patrick scheduled an interview with Andrew Christian- a clothing designer famous for his underwear and swim wear lines. In typical fashion, we were cutting it quite close to the agreed upon time for the interview. When we arrived to the Andrew Christian factory in Glendale, California, I quickly dropped off Patrick & Brian in front while Adam and I looked for parking. After finding a spot, Adam and I dashed our way back to the building and were quickly escorted to a pink-colored room where Andrew Christian, Patrick and Brian were. I quickly introduced myself and asked permission to take pictures while Patrick conducted the interview to which he graciously obliged.

Prior to getting there, I was under the assumption that Patrick was conducting the interview since I heard him prepping interview questions with Adam and Brian earlier in the day. To my surprise, after about three questions, Patrick looked over my way seeking some assistance. For everyone who knows me, I am actually quite camera shy- that is why I’m usually the one behind the camera during Hawt Topics. Luckily for me, I had done research on Andrew and his company before coming on our trip. It also doesn’t hurt that I have a fashion background and a keen interest in the industry. After my initial shock of being included in the interaction, I immediately started to chat with Andrew and pose some questions. What followed was a very easy-going dialogue between Andrew, Patrick and myself which I greatly enjoyed.

Andrew, unlike most designers I have met, is very mild-mannered and soft-spoken. He has a quiet confidence that is very endearing and captivating. I don’t know why I was surprised, as this was the same type of persona he presented on the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency during season three. Speaking of Janice Dickinson, we asked Andrew what it was like working with her. He stated that she was a total professional and both of them got along famously. Here are some of the highlights from our interview with Andrew who- despite being busy preparing for a fashion show later that evening at Here lounge in West Hollywood- took the time to talk with us, take pictures, and give us a tour of his warehouse.

Born and raised in California, Andrew Christian knew at an early age that the fashion world was where he belonged. Right out of high school, he began working for other people but quickly realized that he was destined to start his own label. What originally started as a clothing line in his garage in 2001 has blossomed into a successful brand sold at all the hottest boutiques around the world, including Kitson, Fred Segal, and Patricia Field to name a few.

Andrew Christian’s underwear collection- as described by Andrew himself- is sporty with a modern take on the classics. According to their sales, the top-selling products are their “Flashback” line which features butt-lifting technology and their “Show-It” line which has a hidden comfy cup that gently lifts and presents the package to the front. Think of these products as the male equivalent of the Wonder-Bra for women. A friend of the environment as well, Andrew Christian has two eco-friendly lines called “Bamboo Fiber” and “Organic Cotton”. Both lines use materials that grow naturally without the need of chemicals or pesticides.

One of the more popular buzz words in corporate culture in the past few years is “outsourcing”, but not for Andrew Christian. He strongly believes in doing everything in-house, from design concept; to creating samples; to production; to shipping; and to printing. The fact that production and quality control is done right there, allows him to tap into the latest styles and fads and quickly put them in production as opposed to contacting an overseas operation. While giving us a tour, we even witnessed Andrew put his money where his mouth is and inspect underwear being sewn by one of his many seamstresses, pointing out any deficiencies.

Just exactly who is the “Andrew Christian Man”? Apparently, there is not one specific type. Recently, Andrew conducted a survey and the results proved his customers were all sorts. They ranged from fashionistas, to jocks, to everyday Joes. In fact, his latest photo shoot had the theme of HOT NERDS with some hot Swedish models to which I chimed a bit too eagerly: “We love Swedish boys!”- right Channa? When asked what his biggest market was besides the United States, (I was expecting him to say Canada or the United Kingdom), he shockingly informed us it was Japan.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Andrew Christian has recently released an upscale line called “Black by Andrew Christian” which will include more casual/dressy fair including button down shirts, vests, pants and jewelry. He also mentioned that he would be making a foray into women’s wear, but said this was more of a struggle as he is unable to “try” out the products himself which he proved later on when we asked him which underwear he was wearing. He stated that he was wearing a prototype and that he would let us know if it held up or not at the “end of the day.” When asked the proverbial question: “Where do you see yourself in five years,” he said he would like to be a “lifestyle” brand, and be showcased in major departments across the country.

Interestingly enough, his dream of being sold in major department stores may become a reality sooner rather than later. Starting on May 7th, Andrew Christian will be competing on Bravo’s new fashion reality TV show called “The Fashion Show“. This competition pits he and 14 other fashion designers against one another in various challenges until only one remains and claims the grand prize of $125,000 cash and a chance to have their designs sold at a national retailer. This new show- which fills the void of Project Runway on Bravo- will be hosted by Isaac Mizrahi, Kelly Rowland- which BTW was my favorite Destiny Child member- and Fern Mallis. Check your local listings and watch every week as one designer gets handed his/her thread and needle and is sent packing for home. You know who I’ll be cheering for!

Due to sound difficulties on set, we decided to use the footage and create a video montage of our time with Andrew Christian. Check it out below.

Andrew is one of those designers who likes to go out there to meet the public and visit the stores where his underwear is sold. Literally days from our interview he was heading off to Virginia Beach and Toronto to start off his tour. Be sure to check him out if he heads over to your neck of the woods. If you’re an aspiring model, you should definitely hit him up since they cast all their fashion shows on the tour with local talent. Here are a few of the upcoming dates.
