Idol Voting Fraud?!

Now, most of you know that “Idol News” is definitely not my area of expertise when compared to legendary commentators Tommy D, Redd, Jonny and Donovan, but considering my latest editorial condemning the voting system in North America, I thought I would throw my two cents into this latest Idol controversy… VOTING FRAUD!

It was just recently discovered that AT&T (the telephone company that SPONSORS American Idol) played a role in Kris Allen’s shocking win. Here’s the AT&T press release…

“Last week, countless parties were held in homes, bars, and other public places across America to watch the ‘American Idol’ finale. In Arkansas, a few local AT&T employees were invited to attend two local watch parties organized by the community. Caught up in the enthusiasm of rooting for their hometown contestant, they brought a small number of demo phones with them and provided texting tutorials to those who were interested.”

I’m sorry Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers, but I need to borrow your line… SERIOUSLY?! Come on, no one gets “caught up in enthusiasm” and as a result offers “texting tutorials”!!! The last time I was “caught up in enthusiasm” I laughed so hard I “lizzed” a little: I did not “bust out a textbook and start offering free math lessons”…?

The so-called manic-induced tutorials- on demo phones no one should have even had– let the Kris Allen fans create “power texts” and send 10 messages with the press of a button as compared to us muggles who could only shoot off one vote at a time. Also, only AT&T users are even allowed to text vote! Nice abuse of a monopoly there!

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not declaring the vote a sham and completely null and void due to this discovery (though I would like to see the numbers on this ridiculousness)… but, it IS disappointing to see this was caused by the sponsors of the show. Though, it certainly bolsters my admonition of the voting system, so for that I say “Thank you AT&T”- you’ve proven democracy to be worse than I could have imagined!
