And then there were two. After weeks of competition, we’re finally at the Dolby Theatre, formerly known as the Kodak, to crown the Season 12 winner. Kree Harrison and Candice Glover face off for one final time. One of them will be the first female American Idol winner since Season 6’s Jordin Sparks. In fact, it’s the first all-female finale since Season 3 when Fantasia beat Diana DeGarmo. Barrino got a reality show and DeGarmo got Ace Young ;) Who’s the real winner?
Each lady sang three songs apiece– Simon Fuller’s pick, their potential coronation song and their favorite performance. Even though Kree won the coin toss, she elected to go first. Silly girl. It’s all about the last spot. Minus the unnecessary Carly Rae Jepsen performance (couldn’t they wait til the results show), it was a solid night. Check out all the performances below and be sure to weigh in on who should win.
Kree: “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan
Candice: “Chasing Pavements” by Adele
On paper, both songs suit each lady well. While well executed, I was a tad bored with Kree’s rendition. She really brought nothing new to it. Candice tried to make it her own, but paled to her other Adele cover of the season- “Lovesong.” Like Randy, I give the edge to Candice, but in the outfit department Kree looked stunning.
Kree: “All Cried Out”
Candice: “I Am Beautiful”
After last season’s best-selling coronation song “Home,” I was expecting another masterpiece. Sadly, both sounded like rejected songs from years past. If you loved old school Idol tracks like “Believe” or “Inside Your Heaven,” you might appreciate them. Once again, I give the edge to Candice, but I prefer Kree’s song just a tad more. It might be me, but Harrison seems a little off tonight. Are nerves factoring in?
Kree: “Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)” by Patty Griffin (Vegas Week)
Candice: “I (Who Have Nothing)” by Ben E. King (Top 10)
Both chose wisely with regards to their best performance. This is the Kree that I fell in love with. Once again, she slayed the Patty Griffin tune. Glover threw the gauntlet down by singing the first part a capella… and it was fantastic. The entire room was silent waiting anxiously for every note. It then built to a powerful crescendo. Absolute perfection. Hands down Glover won the round.
If there was any justice in the American Idol world, Candice is our next winner. It was no contest. She was far superior tonight. I fear it might just come down to personal taste though. Given the demo still watching the FOX show, I think Kree’s musical genre is more up the masses’ alley. Hopefully, I’m wrong, but I think Kree might win this even though Candice deserves it. If Glover does win, she’ll be the first Idol winner to audition multiple times for the show. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe all the other winners were first timers.
Who do you think won tonight? Which lady will take the crown? What’s your favorite performance from each girl? Sound off below.
