American Film Institute Names Top Movies & TV Shows In 2016

afi-2016-top-filmsThe American Film Institute has announced its selection of best movies and television shows in 2016. Their short list of films typically are Oscar bound.

Their cinematic selections included many of this year’s usual suspects of Oscar contenders, including La La Land, Manchester By The Sea and Moonlight. However the group, threw in a little surprise. Disney’s animated hit Zootopia made the elite cut. Didn’t expect that at all.

AFI Awards is proud to recognize the achievements of the storytelling teams who have enlightened and informed us, guided and inspired us and ultimately invited us to empathize with others in a reminder of our common humanity.” -American Film Institute president and CEO Bob Gazzale

Over on the small screen, it was a solid mix of veteran and freshmen series. With regards to the latter, breakout hits This Is Us and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story were singled out, along with two Netflix series, The Crown and Stranger Things.

The organization also bestowed the AFI Special Award to the eight-hour documentary O.J.: Made in America the. If the ESPN project doesn’t win Best Documentary at the Academy Awards, I will be shocked.

The awards will be presented to the honorees at a luncheon on January 6, 2017 in Los Angeles. Check out both Top 10 lists below.
