Jagged Little Pill is one of the biggest-selling albums of the ’90s, selling over 33 million copies worldwide. The Alanis Morissette era-defining LP was one of the most critically-acclaimed as well. It earned nine Grammy nominations, winning five including Album of the Year. A musical based on the classic rock album is set to premiere May 2018.
The production revolving around “a modern and multigenerational family and their complex dynamics, touching on issues of gender identity and race” was first announced back in 2013. Tony-winning Diane Paulus (Pippin, Waitress) will direct the musical while Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno) and Tom Kitt (Green Day’s American Idiot musical) take on writing the book and composing the music respectively.
“The team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true. The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent,” Alanis said in a statement. “Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”
Jagged Little Pill will premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. in May 2018. Excited to hear “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” and “Hand in My Pocket” in the musical? Weigh in below.
