The American Film Institute Names Best Films & TV Shows Of 2013

With all the attention focused on movies this time of year, I thought I’d give some loving to programs on the small screen. Truth be told, the American Film Institute’s picks for Top 10 best films are pretty much status quo with all the recent critics awards, The only exceptions being Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Wolf of Wall Street and Tom Hanks’ Saving Mr. Banks finally entering the Oscar race. I really didn’t feel like talking about another 12 Years A Slave win 😉

On the television side, the AFI made some room in their Top 10 for new blood. Orange Is The New Black, The Americans, Masters of Sex and Scandal were just a few first-timers who made the cut. Despite being the highest-rated of the three, American Horror Story: Coven was snubbed. Also noticeably absent were Girls, Homeland and Modern Family. All of which have been included on the list since their respective freshman year. Is this the beginning of the end for the Emmy-winning ABC sitcom’s winning streak?

Based on the AFI’s mandate, below are the ten outstanding films and 10 outstanding television programs deemed culturally and artistically representative of the year’s most significant achievements in the art of the moving image. See if you agree with their list.

The AFI TV Programs of 2013

  • The Americans
  • Breaking Bad
  • Game of Thrones
  • The Good Wife
  • House of Cards
  • Mad Men
  • Masters of Sex
  • Orange is the New Black
  • Scandal
  • Veep

The AFI Movies of 2013

  • 12 Years A Slave
  • American Hustle
  • Captain Phillips
  • Fruitvale Station
  • Gravity
  • Her
  • Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Nebraska
  • Saving Mr. Banks
  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • LittleDreamer

From the Top10 I watch(ed) Breaking Bad, Masters of Sex & Scandal. The last eight episodes of Breaking Bad are in a league of their own, especially the episode “Ozymandias”, Scandal is on fire this season and I ended up liking Masters of Sex more than i thought.
Also, it doesn’t surprise me that Homeland didn’t make the list. This season isn’t up to par with the previous two and the plot has been moving at a glacial pace.

No Hunger Games or Walking Dead? Are they omitting must-see popular shows to seem edgy?
