The sportswear giant recently took a giant step toward promoting inclusion and equality for LGBT athletes. Adidas introduced a contractual clause that it will not terminate or alter contracts with LGBT athletes should the athlete come out after signing with the company. Adidas CFO Robin Stalker announced the news.
“Adidas acknowledges and adheres to the principles of diversity, as this is a central part of the Adidas group philosophy,” the updated clause states. “Therefore Adidas warrants that this agreement will neither be terminated nor modified in case the athlete comes out to the public as a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.”
Adidas is a longtime LGBT ally. It signed Olympian Tom Daley to a sponsorship deal after he publicly came out in December 2013. Last year, adidas Originals celebrated LGBT Pride by releasing a limited-edition footwear series. One included a paint-splattered version of their iconic Stan Smith design.
