ABC Debuts First Promo For ‘Dirty Dancing’ Remake

Remakes of beloved classics typically underwhelm rather than impress. With ABC’s upcoming take of Dirty Dancing, I’m cautiously optimistic. That sentiment is mostly due to the stellar cast assembled.

Colt Prattes, who made everyone thirsty in Pink’s “Try” music video, steps into Patrick Swayze’s shoes to play Johnny Castle. Also appearing are Debra Messing as Baby’s mom Marjorie, Bruce Greenwood as her dad Dr. Jake Houseman, Nicole Scherzinger as Penny Rivera, Sarah Hyland as Lisa Houseman, Tony Roberts as Max Kellerma, Katey Sagal as Vivian Pressman, Billy Dee Williams as Tito, J. Quinton Johnson as Marco and Jennifer Lopez’s ex boy toy, Casper Smart as Billy Kostecki.

My only apprehension is the decision to cast Abigail Breslin as Baby Houseman, memorably played by Jennifer Grey in the original 1987 film. I really hope she surprises me and slays it.

Unlike most television musicals these days, the alphabet network’s three-hour adaptation won’t be a live affair. Its fresh perspective will dive deeper into the iconic characters, showcasing their progression and tackling social themes like race, women’s rights and the socio-economic division in the country at that time.

Dirty Dancing premieres on Wednesday, May 24 at 8pm ET on ABC. Check out the first promo below.
