The buzz surrounding this latest remake of A Star Is Born has been deafening. Early reviews from celebrities who’ve seen a screening including Sean Penn have praised the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper and incredible performance by Lady Gaga. At long last, we have our first look. The trailer for the highly-anticipated project has arrived.
The movie, based on William Wellman’s 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, centers on a fading star who helps an aspiring actress while his own career spirals downward. Two remakes followed years later. James Mason and Judy Garland starred in a 1954 version, while Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson headlined the 1976 film.
In this new take on the tragic love story, Cooper plays seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers—and falls in love with—struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer… until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons. Andrew Dice Clay, Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliott also star.
In addition to playing Ally, Gaga, who earned her Oscar nod for the song “Til It Happens to You” from “The Hunting Ground,” performs original songs in the film, which she wrote with Cooper and a handful of artists, including Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson. All the music is original and was recorded live.
Truthfully, I was expecting to get goosebumps watching the trailer. Alas, they never came. Maybe when I watch the film in its entirety is when I’ll be wowed. Here’s hoping.
