76th Golden Globes: The Nominations, The Surprises & The Snubs

We’re definitely in the thick of awards season. Today was The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s turn to reveal their picks for the best in both film and television. Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slater did the honors and announced the nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globes early this morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The glitzy event is my favorite to watch since it always delivers unforgettable moments.

Leading the pack with six nominations is Adam McKay’s Vice. The political biopic starring Christian Bale as Dick Cheney snatched up Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Actor for Bale, Best Actress for Amy Adams, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell and Best Screenplay. The Favourite, Green Book and A Star Is Born were just behind with five nods apiece.

Black Panther made history, becoming the first superhero movie to receive a nomination for Best Motion Picture – Drama. It also snagged one for Best Original Song for “All The Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Crazy Rich Asians also scored a couple of nods- Best Actress for Constance Wu and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

With regards to snubs, we have Ethan Hawke for First Reformed. The film and Hawke have been racking up noms from several indie groups. Both Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were singled out for their performances, but Sam Elliott missed out for Best Supporting Actor. Mary Poppins Returns scored four mentions, but surprisingly none for Original Song.

If Yalitza Aparicio was going to make a case for Oscar, I fully expected the HFPA to give her a Best Actress nod for her amazing work in Roma. Guess she didn’t have enough star wattage for their liking. Other major snubs were Ryan Gosling for Best Man, Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk and Annihilation, A Quiet Place and Mary Queen of Scots all not snagging a single nomination.

Over on the television front, The Assassination of Gianni Versace reigned supreme with four nominations including Best Actor for Darren Criss. The Americans, Barry, Homecoming, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Sharp Objects and A Very English Scandal were right behind with three noms.

A couple of quick others notes. Ecstatic that Richard Madden and The Bodyguard made the cut. God dang, he looks fine in a suit 🙂 Equally excited that Pose received some love for Best Drama and Best Actor for Billy Porter. Category is, Golden Globe Realness!!!

The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards air on NBC on Sunday, January 6. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg have been named co-hosts of the star-studded event. It’s worth noting Oh snatched up a nod for Killing Eve. Go Sandra!!!
