Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Salma Hayek have all taken a turn as chairs for the Met Gala. Most recently, it was Rihanna. For the 2019 Met Gala, Lady Gaga will be the belle of the ball. The 32-year-old pop star has been named one of the co-chairs of the annual fashion event.
In addition to Mother Monster, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will serve as the gala’s other co-chairs. The theme for next year’s event will be “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” It was framed around Susan Sontag‘s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.’”
Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institue told Vogue that camp, “has become increasingly more mainstream in its pluralities—political camp, queer camp, Pop camp, the conflation of high and low, the idea that there is no such thing as originality.” Camp, he continues, has been described as style without content. “But I think you’ve got to be incredibly sophisticated to understand camp—look at Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs.”
The 2018 theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” was the most successful Met fashion exhibit to date, attracting over one million visitors. It shattered the previous record set by 2015’s “China: Through the Looking Glass.”
Given the theme of extravagance, I think Gaga is the perfect choice. Do you? Weigh in below. The 2019 Met Gala takes place on May 6, 2019.
