24th Screen Actors Guild Awards: The Nominations & The Snubs

As a general rule, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are a very good barometer when it comes to predicting Oscar nominees and eventual winners in the acting categories. SAG voters most closely overlap with Academy voters.

When it comes to the top prize, no film has won Best Picture at the Academy Awards without a corresponding Outstanding Cast nod at the SAGs since 1995’s Braveheart. Nominations for the 24th annual SAGs created a bit of an obstacle for presumed Oscar Best Picture frontrunners Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, The Shape of Water and The Post. None of those films scored a Best Performance By A Cast nomination.

While Meryl Streep notched her record-breaking 31st Golden Globe nomination earlier this week, the 68-year-old living legend failed to make the Best Actress category. Surprisingly, her co-star Tom Hanks was also snubbed. All is not lost for Streep and The Post though. Late December releases sometimes miss out at the SAGs only to come roaring back when the Oscar nominations are announced.

Other notable names who failed to make the cut include Daniel Day Lewis, Armie Hammer, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer.

So, who got nominated? Several usual suspects who’ve been racking up mentions this awards season including Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Allison Janney, Gary Oldman, Frances McDormand and Willem Dafoe to name a few.

The most surprising development has to be The Big Sick. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association snubbed the Sundance breakout film, but it earned Best Ensemble Cast and Best Supporting Actress for Holly Hunter. The Kumail Nanjiani-starring vehicle is firmly back in the Oscar race.

A couple of under the radar contenders picked up some serious steam today with their nominations. Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya, Downsizing’s Hong Chau and The Disaster Artist’s James Franco showed they’re still in the hunt for Oscar glory.

The 24th SAG Awards air on TNT and TBS on Sunday, January 21. Kristen Bell will serve as the ceremony’s first ever host. It was also recently announced that the 2018 show will have solely female presenters.

“I feel pretty strongly about the women’s movement,” executive producer of the show, Kathy Connell said. “Women stepped forward in such a huge way in this last year…I want to salute women who are coming forward to speak at a very difficult time about very difficult subjects at great risk to themselves.”
