2018 AFI Winners: ‘Black Panther,’ ‘Mary Poppins’ Make Cut As Do ‘Pose’ & ‘American Crime Story’

The American Film Institute just revealed their Top 10 lists for the best in cinema and television the past year. When it comes to Oscar precursors, the AFIs have a pretty strong record. Since the Academy expanded that category in 2009, the AFI has correctly predicted 65 of the 73 nominees that were American-made. That translates into a staggering 89% success rate.

On the movie side, blockbusters Black Panther, A Quiet Place and A Star Is Born made the cut. As did critical favorites If Beale Street Could Talk, Green Book and The Favourite. Serious Oscar contender Roma, from Alfonso Cuarón, failed to make the Top 10 list because it was ineligible due to it’s mostly a foreign production. It did however receive a special AFI award.

Over on the television side, Ryan Murphy had plenty of reason to celebrate. His programs Pose and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story made the list. The Americans, This Is Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel also were recognized.

Check out each respective Top 10 list below.
