2017 SAG Awards: Nominations & Snubs

2017-sags-nominations-snubsJust when the 2017 Oscars were starting to take shape, the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards have shaken up the race. Perceived contenders for Academy Awards have been omitted while others have popped out of nowhere to secure nods.

Similar to what happened with the Golden Globes noms, Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Martin Scorsese’s Silence were completely shut out. You can pretty much consider Tom Hanks and Liam Neeson’s chances for getting Oscar love dead. Instead, Viggo Mortenson appears to be a sure bet to sneak onto the list. Once again, he’s surprised pundits by securing a Best Actor nod for Captain Fantastic.

With regards to the women, Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Isabelle Huppert (Elle) and Ruth Negga (Loving) looked like locks, but the SAGS flipped the script and snubbed them. Instead Emily Blunt, who’s been nowhere this awards season, snatched up her very first SAG nom for The Girl On The Train. Total surprise there. Another surprise is Octavia Spencer for Hidden Figures getting love while her castmates Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae were ignored.

The SAGs don’t have a Best Movie award, but rather a Best Ensemble award. Presumptive Oscar Best Picture frontrunner La La Land failed to earn a nomination, though Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone received individual ones. Don’t count the film out for the Academy Awards just yet. While the SAGs are a great barometer for the acting awards (100% correct for Best Actor and 70% for Best Actress the past decade), their track record for Best Picture isn’t great. It only has a 60% accuracy rate for Best Film.

Over on the television side, Stranger Things was the big story. Both Millie Bobby Brown and Winona Ryder received notice and are competing with each other for Best Actress in a Drama Series. While the men of This Is Us received no love from the Golden Globes, Sterling K. Brown earned a SAG nomination. He’s also up for Best Actor in a Limited Series, against Courtney Vance. It’ll be interesting to see which American Crime Story: The People v OJ Simpson actor comes out on top. Up until now, they’ve been nominated in separate categories- lead and supporting.

Check out all the nominations for the 23rd annual SAG Awards below. The ceremony airs live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 29.
