GLAAD Nominates Only Two Titles For Outstanding Film At 28th Media Awards

For the first time in a decade, only two films were nominated for Outstanding Film – Wide Release at the 28th annual GLAAD Media Awards. Moonlight will battle it out against Star Trek Beyond for top honors. The latter seems like a random choice, no? Was there really only two major releases last year that featured quality gay content? The organization declares that this indicates a “reflecting [a] need for more progress in that industry.”

“At a time when progress is at a critical juncture, it is imperative that Hollywood tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity — and build understanding that brings all communities closer together,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. She adds, “This year’s nominees have created images and storylines that challenge misconceptions and broaden understanding, accelerating acceptance and equality for LGBTQ people across the globe.”

Last year, Carol took home the big award, besting The Danish Girl, Dope, Freeheld and Grandma.

The annual event also celebrates the outstanding representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives in television and music as well. Unlike the film category, there were plenty of nominees to celebrate.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles on April 1 and in New York on May 6. Check out the major nominations below.
