AFI Announces Top Movies & TV Shows Of 2017

Since 2009 when the Academy expanded the Best Picture category to include up to 10 nominees, the American Film Institute’s choices for the best in cinema have matched roughly five to eight per year. The Oscar hopes for all the movies that made the cut this year just greatly improved.

“At a time when the world seems defined by division, storytellers bring us together as one,” AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale said in a statement. “AFI Awards is honored to celebrate this community of artists who challenge and inspire us, entertain and enlighten us — ultimately reminding us of our common heartbeat.”

The AFI’s Top 10 list includes plenty of major Oscar contenders including Lady Bird, The Post, The Shape of Water and Call Me By Your Name. The most surprising is the inclusion of Patty Jenkin’s blockbuster Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. should be very pleased with that. It’s still a long shot for an Oscar nod, but its prospects just got a little brighter.
