In terms of prestige and correctly predicting the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are one of the most important stops during the long awards season. But regarding fashion, they pale in comparison to the Golden Globes and the big event itself, the Academy Awards. Most starlets and nominees save their big couture guns for those two events. That said, any red carpet during this time is important to win over the public and also perhaps some Academy voters. At the very least, impress fashion designers by showing off your red carpet prowess. That way, you become their first choice at the next huge event.
For my SAGs fashion roundup, I picked my five best and five worst dressed actresses, along with other stars who I was on the fence. Keep in mind that fashion is highly-subjective. As I was researching who designed what dress, I found that sometimes a star would be on a best list and other times on the worst. Fashion is definitely a tricky game to manipulate.
It’s a shame The Impossible actress didn’t win a SAG award. The 44-year-old siren would’ve wowed everyone as she walked to the podium in this white Marchesa gown. Old school Hollywood glamor at its finest.
Hunt was age-appropriately sexy in this shimmery Romona Keveza dress. Her look was perfectly accessorized with Neil Lane jewels and a Swarovski clutch.
I’m typically not wowed by The Vampire Diaries star on the red carpet, but she impressed me in this pink Elie Saab gown. You can’t tell here, but it featured a couple of lacy cut-outs in the back. Très chic
I’m not quite sure why Alexis Bledel was there, but I’m glad she attended. I’m in love with this emerald green Rena Lange creation. The pleating is breathtaking.
The Modern Family star was another one who wowed in a bold color choice. She looked elegant in this strapless purple Dolce & Gabbana design.
Even though these four didn’t make my Top 5 list, I thought they deserved a mention for looking oh so pretty. This is, IMHO, the best Jordin Sparks has ever looked. This Nicole Miller Atelier dress really flattered her. Lea Michele was pretty in pink in a strapless Valentino. I really liked the whole goddess vibe Jessica Pare (Mad Men) was giving off. Not that Carmen Electra’s outfit was groundbreaking, but I had to include her because I think this is the classiest she’s ever looked. Don’t you agree?
What were Ariel’s people thinking??? This is absolutely the wrong dress for her age and body type. This Alex Perry gown was very mother-of-the-bride.
The more I looked at the Entertainment Tonight host in this turquoise glitter asymmetric Mark Zunino number, the more I hated it. It’s like she’s auditioning for the musical version of The Little Mermaid.
All awards season long, the Silver Linings Playbook actress has been hit or miss on the red carpet. Last night, she was an understated miss. The Christian Dior dress is pretty enough, but I just understand that separation by the knees. When she stood up to accept her award, many thought her dress had ripped when the sheer part appeared.
The lipstick is waaaaay to dark for Danes and this one-sleeved Givenchy dress. Apparently, this was custom-made for the Homeland actress. Clearly, she pissed off someone at the House of Givenchy. LOL.
For the fifth and final slot, I thought I’d place both girls here since I couldn’t decide between them. There’s just something about January Jones‘ Prabal Gurung dress that doesn’t work for her. Perhaps too matronly? Kaley Cuoco is proof positive that bangs don’t work on everyone. I’m so tired of the Big Bang Theory actress wearing this silhouette. It’s too junior for the 27-year-old. You’re not going to the prom anymore, girlfriend. Just in case you were wondering, her red lacy number is by Ramona Kaveeza.
Jaimie Alexander’s black Marc Bouwer was almost perfect. The neck part is too distracting and heavy. For the next three ladies, I thought their dresses were gorgeous… just not for them. Jennifer Garner looked like she was trying to channel Ben Affleck’s ex J.Lo too much in this gold Oscar de la Renta. Julianne Moore’s white-navy flowery applique Chanel and Julia Stiles’ Amen Couture dress also would’ve looked great on other actresses, IMHO.
