2013 American Music Awards: The Performances & The Winners List

2013-amas-performances-winners

The 41th annual American Music Awards took place at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre Live on Sunday night with Mr. Worldwide aka Pitbull hosting. Random choice, right?

Heading into the evening, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had the most nominations with six. Even though they nabbed two AMAs, Taylor Swift was the big winner of the night. The 23-year-old singer won four awards – Artist of the Year, Favorite Country Female Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, and Favorite Country Album for Red. It was her third time winning the year’s top prize!

The top male dog was Justin Timberlake who walked away with three statues. Other multiple winners were One Direction and Rihanna. The AMAs bestowed the latter with their first ever Icon Award which was presented to her by her mom. Adorable.

With regards to performances, Lady Gaga in my opinion stole the show alongside R. Kelly with their sexually-charged tribute to JFK and Marilyn Monroe. Other memorable highlights include Katy Perry’s Japanese-themed “Conditionally” number, DWTS’ Maks Chmerkovskiy tossing around J. Lo during her Celia Cruz homage, Miley Cyrus being accompanied by a giant kitty and Christina Aguilera’s beautiful duet with A Great Big World.

On the flip side, I was underwhelmed with both Ariana Grande and TLC. The former was fantastic vocally but a tad boring, while the latter served practically zero energy during their “Waterfalls” performance with Lil Mama subbing in for the late Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes. Check out all the performances and winners below.

What was your favorite moment of the night? Do you think Taylor Swift deserved Artist of the Year honors once again? Who underwhelmed? Sound off below.

  • JT

    Gaga killed it.

  • Sebastián Morales

    I really loved Ariana’s performance.

  • Jaqq

Seriously, what’s with the kitty? I closed my eyes while listening & it couldn’t have been better. Miley, please drop the act because people will get bored sooner or later

  • Raph

Just like JT said, Gaga killed it once again. There were a lot of great and fun performances tho, including JLo, Miley, Ke$ha & Pitbull….

  • Jorge Molina

Are you serious about Gaga? OMG the performance was more like a joke than a award show performance. She is trying too hard and sometimes simple is better

  • David

Ariana, Ariana, Ariana, that’s how it’s done. Big voices seem to come in small packages. Her performance was simple and beautiful. Gaga’s performance was another favorite.
I’m sorry but what is up with Rihanna’s hair? Mess, either way congrats. Fifth Harmony is so good. I love those girls.

  • belladonnamadon

What world do you live in? Gaga has been crazy & amazing since 2008 & she’s not changing. Why do people like being normal all the damn time. Lol

  • belladonnamadon

Gaga was the best & that was her best performance of the year! That was theatricality at it best, Can wait to see the music video . I’m happy my girl is back! Katy was amazing loved the song & all the Asian themed art, Ariana sound Beyond great that girl can sing but JLo was the second best of the night & I loved Imagine Dragons performance so good!!!!

  • Rob

Article written poorly. Since when is this site a tabloid?

  • jeremiahsaint

    trying too hard???
is that why she nailed the vocals while still moving around and doing the choreography???
ur faves will never be able to perform like her unless your fave is beyonce – its sad people care more about catchy songs than the actual talent the person has
gaga and bey hold the standard for stars who can perform and deliver good vocals at the same time
someone who was trying too hard was miley – what the fuck did the cat have to do with anything why didn’t she just sing it without anything flashy

  • jeremiahsaint

ariana and gaga were hands down the best
grande brought the runs and the high notes while gaga delivered the showstopping number

  • eric

you forgot to include imagine dragons great performance!

  • alleexx

the best of the night by far IMAGINE DRAGONS nothing beats a real band playing with everything they’ve got and katy was good cheesy but good but gaga and miley why so much shit why cant you just performe without all that nonesence attention w***es

  • we originally embedded it, but YouTube took it down along with a couple of the other performances.
