2012 Fall TV: Our Favorite Returning Shows

Even though a few shows have premiered already, the official start to the 2012-2013 television season doesn’t start for a couple of weeks. I love this time of year. It’s the perfect time to relax and unwind after a hectic summer partying schedule. What better way to do so then to sit on your couch and check out all the network’s new and returning shows. That’s what we plan on doing. Check out Patrick, Tyrell, our newest writer Matt and my Top 5 list of favorite returning shows this Fall.

Donovan’s 5 Returning Show Picks

When I asked the other three writers for their respective lists, I had no idea there would be so much crossover. To mix things up, I decided to take on a different approach for my picks. Continue reading to discover the criteria I used for my selection process.

The X Factor

Reality TV: It’s no secret, I’m a big reality addict. Rather than populate my list with shows solely from this genre, I decided to pick just one. While I’m looking forward to Chippendales racing on The Amazing Race and The Facts of Life’s Lisa Whelchel competing on Survivor, I have to say it’s The X Factor I’m excited for the most. When Britney Spears and Demi Lovato were announced as replacements for Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, I hated the idea. But as promos surfaced, I began warming up to their addition. I really hope they live up to the hype, because I’m rooting for Simon Cowell’s show to dominate this time around.

Drama: ABC’s midseason political drama premiered to so-so numbers in the Spring. But as the storylines got juicier, the ratings increased with the season finale garnering the show’s highest ratings. Kerry Washington definitely won me over. She’s cool, calm and brilliant and without her, the show would sink. I expect more twists and turns from Shonda Rimes for the second season. I can’t wait to find out who Quinn Perkins really is.

The Walking Dead

Cable: This was a hard choice between Dexter, American Horror Story and The Walking Dead. In the end, the zombies won out. Just like True Blood, it took me a couple of seasons to finally cave in and give the show a shot. What was I waiting for? The show is amazing and I’m completely hooked now. I’m really looking forward to the addition of Michonne for the show’s third season in October.

2 Broke Girls

Comedy: Again another difficult category for me. I could’ve chosen Happy Endings or Modern Family, but I wanted to surprise you and opted for 2 Broke Girls instead. Sure, Kat Dennings has a tendency to shout her lines, but there’s something innately likeable about the two broke girls trying to build a cupcake empire. The show was often criticized for its borderline racist jokes, but I found their politically incorrect humor kinda hilarious. I hope they don’t tone it down for Season 2.

Once Upon A Time

Homorazzi Favorite: If you’re an avid reader of the site, you know we love Revenge, Glee, Once Upon A Time, Modern Family to name a few. Out of the aforementioned shows, I have to say I’m really stoked for Once Upon A Time. The game-changing season finale was EPIC. I thought for sure the producers would string us along for a couple more seasons before the residents of Storybrooke realized they were fairy tale characters. I’m so curious what happens next.

Patrick’s 5 Returning Show Picks

I’m always excited for a new season of Survivor, and this fall season set in The Philippines is now different. There are some returning players, some hot eye candy (one guy), and some familiar faces (namely the Lisa Whelchel from The Facts Of Life). The other cool thing that I like about this season is that there are going to be three tribes instead of two. The premiere of this season takes place on the finale of Big Brother so that’s going to be one freaking amazing night of CBS Reality TV.

I literally watched the last five minutes of last season’s finale about 20 times – so epic! It also was left on such a note that left we dying in anticipation of Season 2. Seriously? How did I not think about Emily’s mom not actually being dead… of course! I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds and obviously am looking forward to some intense dialogue and evil glares between Emily and Victoria.

Once Upon A Time

This is another show that ended on such a note in it’s first season that left me so excited for the next one to begin. The cat’s out of the bag and the main characters are now aware or up front about the fact that they are really fairy tale characters. More of these characters will be introduced this season and I’m sure more twists and turns lay ahead as well.

The X Factor

I was so “singing show-ed” out but I am absolutely tuning into this season simply to watch Britney Spears. Seriously, remember when you would barely ever see interviews with her and now she’s going to be on a regular TV show commenting on every performance and audition? Amazing! I’m actually very curious to find out what the ratings will be because I have a feeling they are going to go through the roof!

Happy Endings

There are many returning comedies that I’m excited about watching this season: The Office, Parks & Recreation, 30 Rock, etc. That being said, Happy Endings seems to really have the “laugh out loud” effect on me. Seriously, I love all of the characters and they each can bring me to tears of laughter on any given episode. If I had to choose, Jane and Penny are my favorite.

Matt’s 5 Returning Show Picks

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy returns for its NINTH season! Not many shows get to stay on the air that long. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a die hard fan and with the tragic death of Lexie Grey last season I can’t wait to see where the show goes this year.

Modern Family

What’s there to say about this one? Modern Family is a hilarious addition to my week. Lighthearted and fun it always makes me laugh. Just what I need after a boring Wednesday.

Okay so I haven’t actually watched the first season of Revenge but Donovan is lending me the DVDs after I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews of this show I’m really looking forward to getting into it.

American Horror Story

This amazingly creepy show returns for it’s second season with an all new storyline. This season’s story is set in a 1960’s asylum and has some returning cast members and a ton of fantastic new ones, including my friend Chris Zylka.

Once Upon a Time

As much as I hate the cheesy effects on this show, I forced myself to watch the entire first season and am invested in the story. Now that all the characters remember who they are/were I’m interested to see where they take the show this season. It doesn’t hurt that the show is filmed near Vancouver in the cute fishing town of Steveston.

Tyrell’s 5 Returning Show Picks

Gossip Girl

As I was going through my list of returning shows, I realized that I have the taste of a 12-year-old girl. Oh well, I’m not ashamed. Let me start with Gossip Girl. While season four got a little sleepy, season five finally picked up near the end and gave me reason to look forward to its sixth and final season. I’m really interested to see who all the characters will hook up with this season. I mean, they are running out of friends in their inner circle. Will Chuck and Blaire reunite? How about Dan and Serena? And poor Rufus. Ultimately, will Kristen Bell finally appear on the show as the real persona behind Gossip Girl? We’ll have to wait and find out!

I have been trying not to do anything “Revenge-y” all summer but it’s been hard without this show on the air. Thankfully, I don’t have to wait much longer. Revenge easily became mine and Patrick’s ultimate guilty pleasure. Seriously, you couldn’t call us on Wedesdays- Revenge was on. So much went down in the season one finale including the reveal that Emily’s mother is still alive and may be one of the main masterminds behind her father’s untimely prison death. I think we are in for a WILD season of drama with this one. I especially can’t wait to see what amazing one-liners Victoria Grayson has up her sleeve. Seriously, her cold quips of wit give me life.

The X Factor

Okay, so I’m a little late hopping on this bandwagon here but come on- BRITNEY FRICKIN’ SPEARS! How can I not want to tune in to the show this season. While I think the voice-related reality competitions are loosing their steam over here in the US, I am willing to give this one a shot for the main reason that I cannot wait to see what kind of advice Ms. Spears has for these hopefuls. From what I’ve seen in the previews, it looks like she has a lot of good stuff to stay, including some mean little tidbits. While I am less than impressed with last year’s winner, I hope season two brings a more promising star to the forefront. Oh ya, I guess I am excited to see Demi Lovato on the show too but whatever. It’s the year of the Spears.

Once Upon A Time

I was never a huge Lost fan but the shows creators have me hooked on their fairy-tale themed Once Upon A Time like nobody’s business. I don’t know if it’s because it’s filmed here in Vancouver or what but even when the show is a little slow and can barely hold my attention, I still tune in week after week to see what’s going to happen. The season one finale felt a little rushed to get all the points across in time. I guess the writers were a little concerned they were going to get cancelled maybe? Regardless, the preview for season two with Captain Hook has me wondering what to expect this season. With magic released upon the real world, I can’t imagine how poor Emma Swan is going to keep up with her mortal ways. It looks like the evil queen herself, Regina Mills has turned Storybrooke upside down. I also look forward to seeing what other characters will work themselves into this coming season.

Happy Endings

Holy mother of hilarity this show is outrageously funny. While some of my friends don’t seem to find the humor in this little show, I cannot get enough of these six friends and their completely dysfunctional relationships. We saw at the end of last season that Dave and Alex may have a shot at rekindling their romance. I hope so as us, the viewer, never really got a chance to see that romance flourish as the show began with Alex leaving Dave at the altar. I am hoping that Max finds a good guy to keep around this season. While Penny’s relationships always seem to fail, it’s been reported that hottie Nick Zano will be appearing alongside her for a few episodes. Delicious. Ultimately, I know she’ll mess it up like she always does- Penny Style- but hey, I’m not mad at a little eye candy for most of the season.

I have a few honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut. I will be tuning in for the all-star season of Dancing With The Stars as much as it pains me to say so. As well, going along with my 12-year-old television tastes, I cannot wait for the upcoming season 9O21O. Such a guilty pleasure! God help me.

    Once Upon A Time!

  • I don’t think Chris Zylka is going to be on American Horror Story anymore. Reports say he was dropped because he did not want to shave his head, so I don’t blame him but bummed that he won’t be on the show since he’s hella cute and seems like a nice guy.

  • Dan

I LOVE this article Dono! In fact, I’d like to throw my two cents into the mix.

Reality Genre – definitely the most excited for The X Factor’s return; however, I was a little annoyed with the Khloe Kardashian rumor. I would have much preferred Simon Cowell continue to slap Nigel Lythgo in the face and offer the job to Cat Deeley.

Drama Genre – while this is a HUGE challenge to pick just one and I squealed at Matt’s nod to Grey’s Anatomy, I have to say I was most excited to see Parenthood show up on my PVR. The show’s fourth season kicked off last night and if you haven’t seen this show, it’s not too late to jump in. To be honest, you don’t even need to start from the beginning of the series (although it is amazing and I highly recommend it), as the story simply continues to evolve and the back story is continuously seeded (brilliantly at that) throughout each new episode/season

Comedy Genre – I have to side with Tyrell on Happy Endings. This show knocked it out of the park from episode one with Penny on the treadmill. I re-watched the episode with Megan Mullaly and the boat show this past weekend and had tears streaming down my face from laughter. On a side note, I am extremely excited to see how Modern Family tackles Gloria’s pregnancy.

Début Show Genre – This one is a tough choice as well, and I definitely have the inside scoop after attending Comic Con in San Diego this past year and seeing a lot of the pilot episodes for almost every major network début. If I was in an arm wrestle with myself as to which show would take the coveted Thursday night spot, my right arm would be fighting for Elementary starring Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Watson in the new-taken on Sherlock Holmes and my left arm fighting for The Following starring Kevin Bacon. I never thought I would be drawn to either show, but after the previews, I couldn’t wait to see how each show progressed in their freshman season. Another show to watch out for in the drama genre is Arrow. If you haven’t seen Stephen Amell with his shirt off, google it, and you’ll understand. The pilot was a bit clumsy, but definitely set the series up for success, and it’s shot in Vancouver!

From a new comedies perspective, and I was once again challenging myself, this time to a thumb war, I would have a lot harder decision to make. My left thumb, and more of an underdog favourite, would go to The New Normal. The gay premise complete with surrograte motherhood only has so much gas before the idea runs dry; however, the additional of Nene Leaks to the cast was one of the best decisions made in Fall TV premiers. My right thumb would be battling as the heavy-weight for Partners (another gay-infused comedy) starring Michael Urie (Ugly Betty fame) as the gay best friend Louis to recently-engaged straight Joe, played by David Krumholtz, whose fame rose significantly this past summer with his supporting role in HBO’s smash hit Newsroom.

All-in, I think this is going to be an amazing Fall TV season, and I can quickly see my PVR and weekday nights filling up with great television!

  • MauiKane

I agree with most of your choices, but am wondering why “Grimm” is not on any of your lists.

  • @MauiKane, I love GRIMM, but left it out since it’s already aired a few episodes. So happy NBC debuted it ahead of the pack. Season 2 has so far been soooooo good.

  • Emma

I am SO excited for Once Upon a Time to come back! I too was surprised when they all remembered who they were in the S1 finale. I can’t wait to see where they take it from there! I work late nights at Dish, so I’m glad I can count on my Hopper to record it for me to enjoy as soon as I get home. I would hate to be out of the loop with this show at all. Some of the other shows on your lists are ones I haven’t seen, but I ADORE Happy Endings. That show is such a gem.

  • Brendan you’re totally right – that is SUCH disappointing news!

  • I was suggested this web site via my cousin. I am no longer certain whether or not this put up is written via him as nobody else understand such specific about my difficulty. You are incredible! Thank you!
