I guess that’s an honor, right? Or does it just mean that either people love the “Fast and the Furious” movies but are embarrassed to go to the theater or simply too cheap to fork over cash. Whatever the reason, the latest installment of the Paul Walker and Vin Diesel franchise earned the title of most-pirated movie of 2011. The film already raked in over $626 million worldwide. Imagine how much more Walker and Diesel could’ve added to their respective bottom lines. Speaking of bottom lines, both of them have very juicy ones ;)

According to TorrentFreak, the racing flick was downloaded an estimated 9.3 million times. Though the number is astounding, “Fast Five” has nothing on last year’s “winner”. James Cameron’s sci-fi 3D opus, “Avatar“, was downloaded more than 16 million times and not only holds the crown for 2010 but for also the most illegally downloaded film of all-time. He truly is “king of the world”.

When comparing the top 10 list’s average over the past two years, one might think that illegal downloading is on the decrease. Not so, according to TorrentFreak. They claim that “alternate piracy sources” including streaming sites and cyberlockers have attributed to the decrease. Plus they say, the number of downloads spread beyond to more movie titles than just the ones in the Top 10. Check out what films “Fast Five” beat to earn this title.

Top 10 Most Pirated Movies in 2011:

  • 1. “Fast Five” – 9.3 million downloads
  • 2. “The Hangover Part II” – 8.8 million downloads
  • 3. “Thor” – 8.3 million downloads
  • 4. “Source Code” – 7.9 million downloads
  • 5. “I Am Number Four” – 7.7 million downloads
  • 6. “Sucker Punch” – 7.2 million downloads
  • 7. “127 Hours” – 6.9 million
  • 8. “Rango” – 6.5 million downloads
  • 9. “The King’s Speech” – 6.3 million downloads
  • 10. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II” – 6 million downloads

I have to say, I’m a little surprised that high-brow movies like “The King’s Speech” and “127 Hours” made the Top 10 list. Are movie pirates’ tastes becoming more refined? Big-budget action movies like the latest installments of “Transformers” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” were both released this year but didn’t make the list. How many of these Top 10 movies did you watch in theaters versus illegally downloading them? Curious minds want to know.
