Vancouver Queer Film Festival: Violet Tendencies & Mr. Right

Vancouver’s 2nd largest film festival is back and bigger than ever for 2010. Celebrating it’s 22nd anniversary this year, The Vancouver Queer Film Festival runs from August 12 til August 22, 2010. For the second year in a row, Homorazzi.com is proud to be a media sponsor for the festival. During this 11 day festival, there will be performances, workshops, panel discussions, parties and more.

As mentioned earlier, Homorazzi.com is supporting the festival once again. Like last year, we are sponsoring two films at this year’s VQFFViolet Tendencies and Mr Right.

Violet Tendencies: 7 pm, Tuesday August 17, 2010 @ Vancity Theatre – $11
Mr Right: 7pm, Thursday August 19, 2010 @ Tinseltown – $11

Make sure you check out the two films and join in on the fun. Even if you don’t check out these two films we are sponsoring, I implore you to check out at least one of the films at this year’s film festival. A lot of hard work and effort has been put forth to produce this event as well as each of the individual films and it would great if we could all show our support. Festival tickets & individual show tickets can be purchased here.

VIOLET TENDENCIES

Synopsis

Ever wonder what happened to teen star Mindy Cohn aka Natalie in the 1980s hit TV show the Facts of Life? Leave it to homo rom com director Casper Andreas to cast Cohn as the lead in his new hit, Violet Tendencies. Violet is Manhattan’s most fabulous fruit fly, but at age forty she’s ready to put down the martini glass and start a serious relationship. Without any straight people in her life to fix her up, Violet scours online dating sites only to be stood up and sadly disappointed. Her roommate Riley suggests she seek out the straight male version of herself: the mythical “Fag Stag.” Her modelesque co-worker Salome gives her conflicting advice, warning Violet that her gay friends are preventing her from nabbing a man. As Violet’s romantic quest becomes increasingly disastrous, hilarious and consuming, she overlooks the potential for love right under her own nose.

MR. RIGHT

Synopsis

Mr Right features a cast of the “usual suspects” seen in gay romantic films: the perfect boyfriend, the artsy queen, the hunky and arrogant slut, etc. Similarly, the central plotline is familiar: boy meets boy, boy loses boy, boy wins boy back. While this classic rom com is easy to sit back and enjoy, there are also many things that set it apart. The actors are an attractive bunch (with adorable Brit accents to boot), however, Mr Right does not rely on glistening abs and bubble butts to win over audiences.
Instead, the brother/sister filmmaking team—Jacqueline and David Morris—have made a refreshingly authentic script and a cast of talented actors the film’s strengths.

The quintessential question “Is Mr Right really out there?” is explored in depth without sugar-coating or cheesy happy endings. Set in London’s gay SoHo neighbourhood, Mr Right is a real slice of gay life.
