2010 SAG Awards Fashion Wrap Up: The Good, The Bad, & The…

Though the SAG Awards aren’t as hyped as “The Golden Globes“, they’re probably the most important awards shows for actors leading up to the Academy Awards. Traditionally, the winners of the SAGs go on to win the Oscars weeks later. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for their red carpet performances. Just because you shine at one, it doesn’t mean you will at the other.

Since the Screen Actors Guild is a bit more low key than other awards shows, most actresses don’t go all out for this evening. Instead, they use it just as another test run for the big night on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theater. Find out which dresses caught my eye, good or bad, below and see if you agree with my choices.

MY 5 FAVORITE DRESSES

Mila Kunis

What she wore: Alexander McQueen printed gown with $300,000 of Cartier jewels.

I love a printed dress and this print is GORGEOUS. It’s easy, breezy, beautiful… CoverGirl.

Lea Michele

What she wore: Oscar de la Renta beaded gown and Tiffany & Co jewelry.

I’m so glad Lea Michele didn’t opt for her usual asymmetrical one-shoulder ruffled gown with train attached ensemble. This beaded gown is simple, but elegant. A perfect choice for this mellow (by Hollywood standards) awards celebration.

Sofia Vergara

What she wore: Roberto Cavalli gown with Chopard earrings and diamond bracelet.

If you been following my fashion round ups for a while, you might think I have a super hard on for Sofia because she always seems to make it on my Best Dressed list. I love how she’s always able to pick flattering dress that celebrate her curves without making her look like a cheap hooker. She picked another winner with this scorching sapphire gown.

Julie Bowen

What she wore: Catherine Malandrino pantsuit with Neil Lane jewels.

Her “Modern Family” star seems to get all the press, but with this sexy sleek modern pantsuit, Julie Bowen deserves the spotlight as well. It’s minimalistic yet glamorous. I absolutely love it.

Hilary Swank

What she wore: Versace one-shoulder gown with jeweled details with a VBH compact clutch.

It feels like forever since we’ve seen Hilary Swank on the red carpet. When she gets it right, it’s heavenly. Her romantic curls perfectly compliment this masterfully draped dress.

MY LEAST 5 FAVORITE DRESSES

Nicole Kidman

What she wore: Nina Ricci lace gown with Fred Leighton necklace.

Whatever happened to Nicole Kidman? She used to be the queen of the red carpet. But just like her movie career, she has just as many major disasters as she has hits on the the awards circuit. This dress with its lace bust and low-cut back, is just too much. She looks like she stepped out of a low budget Victorian period film.

Jennifer Lawrence

What she wore: Hot pink Oscar de la Renta dress with black belt. Accessorized with Fred Leighton jewels and Judith Leiber clutch.

This Oscar nominee is one of the hottest actresses around. Unfortch, her dress is not. I’m never a fan of hot pink on the red carpet and this is a perfect example of why. It’s a shame though, because I think the dress is actually pretty. I love how it flatters her shoulders and the twists are beautiful. If she changed the color and lost the belt, this would be a winner.

Christina Hendricks

What she wore: L’Wren Scott black sequined wrap with Rene Caovilla peep-toes and Judith Leiber clutch.

Normally Christina Hendricks picks fashion winners that compliment her voluptuous figure. This L’Wren Scott number looks like a bathrobe you’d find in Elton John’s bathroom.

Hailee Steinfeld

What she wore: Striped Prada dress with matching Prada shoes.

Hailee is so cute and I hate to put her on this list, but I’m not loving the stripes. I just think there are just too many. I applaud her, though, for picking an age-appropriate dress and not picking a gown that makes her look like she’s playing dress up with her mom’s clothes.

Kim Kardashian

What she wore: Plum Marchesa gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

You all know, I’m not a fan of this Kardashian sister, but all biases aside… this dress is ostentatious. It looks like her jewelry is eating her dress. There’s way too much random bling on her dress. Just like her, this dress is overexposed.

OTHER LOOKS WORTH MENTIONING

Natalie Portman, Amy Adams, Eva Longoria

What they wore: Portman wore an Azzaro gown accessorized with Roger Vivier black satin clutch. Adams sizzled in a Herve L. Leroux halter with Kimberly McDonald jewels. Longoria wore a Georges Hobeika gown and Neil Lane earrings.

There were so many actresses that chose beautiful white dresses that I couldn’t pick just one to highlight. Though they didn’t make my Top 5 list, these three all were white hot on the red carpet. Great job, ladies.

January Jones

What she wore: Carolina Herrera lace gown with Roger Vivier gold pumps

Either you love or hate January’s fashion choices, but you can’t deny she’s a risk taker. No matter what awards show she’s at, she always manages to pick a different look from the rest of the ladies and stand out. If she had slicked her hair back or put it in a pony tail instead of the wave, it would’ve suited the dress much better.

Angie Harmon

What she wore: Monique Lhuillier and Brian Atwood pumps

Normally, feathers on the bottom of a dress would win me over. But for some reason I’m on the fence with this dress. I just think it’s more for an Oscar / Golden Globes type of event instead of the SAGs. I guess if you’re not invited to those events, you probably want to bring out your big guns to the ones you are invited to.

There you have it boys and girls, my fashion hits and misses for last night’s SAG awards. Which dresses hit the right note for you and which did not? I’d love to hear them all. Post them below.

When Angie Harmon walked on stage in that feather duster monstrosity I thought someone crossbred a flamingo with an ostrich. And not in a good way… Is there a good way? I have to hope there is so this can be wrong.
