12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. He works on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release. The film is based on the 1853 autobiography written by Northup.
Joining Fassbender and Ejiofor in the Steve McQueen-directed film is a star-studded cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfre Woodard, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti and Brad Pitt. The latter plays a Canadian abolitionist who forever alters Northup’s life after a chance meeting. 12 Years A Slave was originally slated for December 2013 but was moved earlier to October 18, 2013 due to overwhelmingly positive test screenings. Based on the trailer I believe it. Check out the riveting clip below.
